Louis Montreal made a terrible trade with the Yankees giving away John Wetteland for some stiff named Fernado Seguignol and Grissom was shipped to Atlanta. Montreal won only 68 games in 95 and finished 5th in the NL East. The 1994 fire sale is the biggest reason why there is no longer baseball in Montreal. Without their star players the team struggled and they lost fan support. Now I understand there are some factors that made the Expos cut cost like the Canadian dollar was worth much less then the U.S dollar in the 90s which made it more expensive to pay players salaries. But people will go see a winning team it doesnt matter what sport people want to watch their hometown team win. So a better team and thus an increase in attendance would help pay players salaries. Also I believe that there would have been a very high chance that many of the star players would have stayed in Montreal if they were given the money or if they werent traded away. The best example of this is Walker who signed with Colorado in 95 and continued to put up monster numbers there. But if Montreal made him a fair offer I believed that he would have stayed with them. First is Larry is a Canadian and I think he would have loved to become the poster boy of Canadian baseball which he would have become if he continued to play there. Second the Rockies didnt overwhelm him with an offer he couldnt refuse. Colorado only payed him a little over 5 million a year from 95-99 while Montreal was paying him an average of 3.5 million a year from 93 to 94. If the Expos offered him something from 5-7 million a year I believe he would have signed.Next Moises Alou would have stayed an Expo if he was offered the money too. In December of 1996 Alou signed with the Florida Marlins and then later led them to a World Series in 1997. Florida didnt overpay for Alou only paying him around 1.5 million more than the Expos were paying him the previous two seasons. The biggest reason why Moises would have remained a Expo is because his father Felipe Alou was the manager. The John Wetteland trade to the Yankees didnt make any sense to me. I understand that Montreal was trying to save money by trading Wetteland and that talented reliever Mel Rojas would replace him as closer but why would they trade a consistent and reliable closer for only one prospect when they should have gotten multiple prospects?Thats like the Royals trading Joakim Soria for just one prospect. Its basic baseball knowledge to trade star players for multiple prospects. That was a panic move by the Expos.

Hey Rick. Thanks for the comment. I understand your argument, however if you think that the "student-athletes" at big time athletic schools "get the same education" as all the other students you are way off base. A lot of top athletes are MADE to take just enough classes to be eligible to continue playing their sport. Their schedules are made for them, often with the easiest courses the school offers or with teachers that are sympathetic to athletes regardless of subject or if they are what the athlete is interested in. Again, I understand your point of view, and agree that in most cases a scholarship is more than enough to "repay" an athlete for his "services" to his/her institution. You can't tell me you are comfortable with the fact that some schools (coughcoughOhioState) make millions and millions off of their athletes though, while the athletes are completely blocked from making any part of it. Doesn't seem fair. But hey, that's why this discussion is so hot right now.

Now I have an issue with this paying college athletes idea that being thrown around. First of all arent these athletes being "paid" in the first place by receiving scholarship money. What else do you want from the school, you are going to the school for free while others have to pay thousands of dollars to get the same education that these athletes are getting. Now they want extra money to have as an allowance. Come on man thats the biggest BS I've heard. If you wanna make money while your at school then find pay your own way and dont play a sport. Then you can go get a job and stop bitching about not having any money. For scholarship athletes your job is to go to class and go to practice. If thats too much then dont take the money from the school. It is as simple as that.

It is an in depth behind the scenes look at what went on that year as the Mets went on to win the world series. I thought it might be cool to bring to your attention, have you heard about it?

I was one of the many fans in our country who was all over Cutler's case after the loss to the Packers. I was not as upset over the fact that we lost the game, but how we lost the game. I have been an anti Lovie Smith Bears fan since his first year in Chicago. The media continues to talk and write about the lack of emotion that Cutler shows in public. Sure, we want emotion out of our star quarterback, but even more so we need emotion out of our head coach. Lovie shows less emotion than Cutler, and is supposedly the man who is running the show. Although by watching him during the game you certainly would not know that.

One of my complaints about Smith is that he could not get along with Ron Rivera, who had our defense take us to the Super Bowl. What did Rivera get rewarded with, he got fired. If it were not for his stellar defense that year the Bears would have been nowhere near the big game. This brings me to this year's NFC Championship game versus the Packers. Aaron Rodgers is an amazing quarterback, but when he began picking apart our defense on the first few plays of his first drive, an adjustment had to be made. Lovie and Rod failed to do so and he marched down the field on us twice early in the game.

Here is my other beef with Lovie. We saw Todd Collins look like a peewee quarterback earlier in the year against the Panthers. How bad is he at judging talent that failed to realize that Caleb Hanie is a far better quarterback than Collins. Todd went out and wasted two drives in the third quarter that we got nothing out of. After seeing what Caleb was able to do once he entered the game, I am left to think about what might have been had he been able to have two more possessions in that game. Sure he threw two int's, but he excelled under a large amount of pressure.

Now, I am not saying the Bears are a better team than the Packers, but I think that game could have had a much different outcome if Lovie made adjustments early, and if he was able to evaluate talent and had Hanie as number 2. I am a die hard Bears fan, but I do think if they won that game they would have been one of the worse offense's to ever represent in the Super Bowl. I know the Ravens were not great when they won, but our offense is brutal. We have no receivers. We have a very good tight end in Olsen, and Forte excels out of the backfield, but as far as the people who are being paid for catching footballs, we have none.

I am a Huge Bears fan, but I am a real fan who can see through the false hope that a Lovie Smith team presents. I hope that management can see through the bad schedule and realize that the Bears only beat two legit opponents this season. If it were not for a lot of hard times for other teams this year, we would have been .500 or worse and watching Lovie get replaced by a new coach. Please don't give him an extension!

Hello this is my first blog. I threw down the newspaper back in the 70s when I read that the owner wants to stay below the crust. I do not have a home team, because William Clay Ford will not do what needs to be done to win a super bowl. We will not see a super bowl during our lifetime in this town. We control the game! We need to stop buying tickets, stop watching games, and stop talking about the Lions. We need to start a movement that will force WCF to sell the team. He is bad for the NFL and we need to find someone to buy the team. His son is no different. 53 years is enough. I don't blame the players, you get what you pay for. Hows the franchise doing on Wall street? If people like WCF so much then send him a charity check and forget football. When you buy something and it don't work you get your money back. WCF owes us 53 years of ticket sales. Larry

Can't wait to see Moss in a purple and gold uni again! He was one of the main reasons I am a fan of the Vikings to this day and am glad to see him back. Hopefully he signs an extension and sticks around for the remainder of his career.

Typical Eagles fans! hehe... Yea Andy Reid hasn't made too many good decisions but this one was one of those good ones. Vick is the sure fire starter for this team. Another thing, Reid's offense is predicated on the pass. That is and has been no secret in the past. So in order for Vick to maximize his effectiveness on this team, he had to learn how to look for the pass, then run. That's part of the reason why I think he had to learn how to become a better passer. Boy, has he learned quickly!

Nick- great post on the Mke Vick Show. yes, Andy Reid may have gotten this call right finally.. like you said, Vick gives them the best chance to win- now.. he is making the throws downfield with his eyes on the field as he leaves the pocket.. with the complexity of their offense, he can make all the plays- run and throw.. Kolb could never make those plays and would most likely have taken the sacks or INTs.. However, we must wait to see how Vick handles pressure defenses, who can rush and cover. That will be the true test of where his skills have developed. so far, so good!! keep them coming!

Good post, Josh..Amino is very interesting player. I think he and Blake Griffin can play well if they both on the court. Manu Ginobli might be the most consistent out of all these guys. It seems year in and year out that he always saves the Spurs. Imagine if they didn t have him. I like the idea of Randolph coming off the bench. He could be much more effective because he won't tire out from playing so many minutes. Should be good to watch.
